Cameron Dodson on Top Once Again in AVSS Action at Toledo
By Duane Turner, Toledo, OH: 16 year old Cameron Dodson from Greenfield, IN took
his third victory of the season at the very fast Toledo Speedway. "We had
another great car tonight". Stated Dodson after his victory. "I really need to
thank Judy Kouba Dominick for this one. She has been a huge help to this team,
and she asked me to win this one for her tonight. Also need to thank our
sponsors, Hoosier, Simpson, The Joie of Seating, Gaerte, Weld Wheels, NGK, K&N
Filters, Auto Meter, and Fuller Life Water."
Toledo, OH resident Jimmy McCune and Bill Tyler would lead field out of turn
four and to the green flag for the start of the 30 lap contest. As the leaders
emerged from turn two, disaster struck AVSS veteran Curt Shumaker. As Shumaker
was passing cars on the high side of turns one and two, a car pushed up the race
track in front of Shumaker. The Premium Truck and Auto Body, Bedrock Express
number 71 had no place to go and jumped the right rear wheel of another car
sending Shumaker hard in to the turn two wall. The driver emerged from his
crippled sprinter under his own power, but the car suffered heavy damage to the
right front corner.
The second attempt to start the race would be successful as McCune jumped out to
an early lead heading in to turn one. Tyler, Mike Ling and Tommy Fedewa were
left to battle for the second position as McCune set the early pace, increasing
his lead. The early portion of the race, teams seemed content to save some tires
and not take any chances. This would all change on lap five, as the ninth place
starting Dodson made a move for the sixth position by using the high side of the
track to get past fellow rookie Ryan Litt. Two laps later, Dodson made a pass
for fifth, then into fourth on lap 11. The action up front was heating up as
McCune entered lapped traffic, allowing the field to close in slightly. As
McCune worked his way through lapped cars racing two wide, a three car battle
was underway for the second position. Tyler, Fedewa and Dodson were racing one
another while working the traffic that was one lap down.
On lap 13, McCune would clear the lapped cars and began to pull away once again.
Dodson used the traffic like a veteran passing Fedewa in turn four on lap 13,
then past Tyler in turn two one lap later. Dodson was still mired in heavy
traffic as McCune continued to increased his lead. By the time Dodson cleared
the traffic on lap 16, McCune had built up a 4.2 second lead over Dodson. On the
next circuit as McCune crossed the start/ finish line, his lap times began to
slow. Dodson quickly closed the gap, and pulled up on the rear bumper of the
leader on lap 17. One lap later Dodson made the pass on the high side of turn
one to take over the lead with the capacity crowd on their feet.
Within two laps, Dodson had built up a 1/4 lap lead over second place
McCune. McCune would lose second, and third place on lap 23, then would retire
from the event on lap 24 with ignition problems. With Dodson out front, the
battle was for the second position between Tyler, Fedewa, Ling, Jason Blonde and
Litt. The five cars all raced for the second position through lapped traffic.
Once the cars cleared the traffic on lap 27, Tyler and Fedewa pulled away
leaving a three car battle for the fourth position.
At the finish, Dodson would take his second consecutive AVSS points race victory
with a 7.2 second margin over second place Tyler. Fedewa, Ling and Blonde
completed the top five. Litt, John Hotchkiss (starting 13th), Dave Baumgartner
(starting 14th), Jeff Bloom and Dennis Craft rounded out the top 10. Kevin
Feeney set fast time with a lap of 12.996 around the high-banked 1/2 mile of
Toledo Speedway. Troy Underwood, son Tyler Underwood, and Dodson claimed the
heat race victories. Up next for the fastest short track cars in the world, a
visit to the famed Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI on Saturday,
June 25. Gates open at 11:00 am, and racing will be underway at 7:00 pm. For
